Main Characters
Steven Universe, the title character, is surrounded by many people who love him. From his friends, family and unlikely allies, they are all vital characters in the animated series. The following are a few main characters:
Steven Universe
The titular protagonist of the series, Steven Quartz Universe is the enthusiastic youngest and only male member of the Crystal Gems. He's the son of Greg Universe and Rose Quartz. A human-Gem hybrid as a result of his parentage, Steven is an extraordinarily unique being with innate powers beyond that of both normal humans and Gems. While only a child, Steven has steadily grown from a tag-along to the Crystal Gems into the team's unofficial leader thanks to his kind-hearted nature and resourcefulness. Though he is part of a monumental legacy, Steven is devoted to fulfilling his destiny as protector of humanity, just as his mother was before him.
Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is the mother of Steven Universe and found of the Crystal Gems. She "gave up her physical form" to allow Steven to be born. Although she appears only in flashbacks, her legacy and her absence define the lives and relationships of the other main characters. She led the ancient rebellion against the Gem homeworld, and the Crystal Gems describe her to Steven as loving and seeing beauty in all forms of life.
Pearl
Pearl is a member of the Crystal Gems. One of Rose Quartz's closest followers and her sole confidant, Pearl is one of the last surviving Gems on Earth who joined the Crystal Gems in their rebellion against the Gem Homeworld. Pearl would afterward protect the Earth over the next several millennia alongside her friends, while later teaching Rose's son, Steven, the ways of Gems.
Garnet
Garnet is the fusion of Ruby and Sapphire and the current de-facto leader of the Crystal Gems. Garnet is one of the last surviving Gems on Earth who joined the Crystal Gems in the rebellion against the Gem Homeworld, and afterwards assisted her friends in protecting the Earth over the next few millennia. After Rose Quartz gave up her physical form to give birth to her son, Steven Universe, Garnet took over as the leader of the group.
Amethyst
Amethyst is a member of the Crystal Gems. She is the last known Gem manufactured on Earth as a part of the Gem Homeworld's Kindergarten project, and one of the last surviving Gems on Earth. After being found by Rose Quartz and the other Crystal Gems, Amethyst helped her friends protect the Earth over the next four millennia, and often aids in the shenanigans of Steven Universe.
Greg Universe
Steven's father, Greg is a former rock singer who now lives in his van and runs a car wash in Beach City. Although Steven lives with the Gems during the time period of the narrative, Greg remains a constant presence in his life. Greg is laid-back, accepting, and supportive of Steven's adventures, though often made uncomfortable by Gem magic. A series of flashback episodes portray the history of his relationship with Rose Quartz.
Connie Maheswaran
Connie Maheswaran is Steven's best friend and a member of the Crystal Gems. After meeting Steven, she slowly began to learn about him, the Gems, and their past. Growing a strong bond with Steven, Connie decided that she wanted to help him and the Crystal Gems whenever danger arose, and began training how to fight using a sword with Pearl starting in "Sworn to the Sword". Since then, Connie has become a skilled swordswoman and often aids the Crystal Gems during times of conflict.
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a Gem from Homeworld who was trapped in a magical mirror on Earth for thousands of years. Initially, she mistrusts the other Crystal Gems and attacks them when Steven frees her. At the end of the fifth season, she grows close to Peridot and joins the Crystal Gems to fight Blue Diamond. She has powerful telekinetic control over water, and can produce wings made of water from the lapis lazuli gemstone embedded on her back.
Peridot
In her introduction, Peridot is a technician dispatched by the Gem Homeworld to check on remaining Gem installations on Earth; her appearance late in the first season becomes an ominous sign that the Crystal Gems are under threat from Homeworld. Stranded on Earth, Peridot becomes a recurring antagonist in the first half of the second season before being eventually captured and convinced to ally with the Crystal Gems to defuse the Cluster. her character arc centers around learning to outgrow Homeworld’s hierarchical, utilitarian mindset and appreciate the value of friendship, individuality, and life on Earth, eventually declaring herself a member of the Crystal Gems and forming a close relationship with Lapis Lazuli. She is cranky and self-aggrandizing in demeanor, but demonstrates willingness to learn from her mistakes and to treat others with greater respect and kindness. Her gemstone is a triangular peridot embedded in her forehead, and she discovers in the third season that she has the ability to telekinetically control metal objects.
